feeding practices that may contribute to infant obesity

1. In a nationally representative sample of 8,150 9-month old infants a study was done by Professor Juhee Kim of University of Illinois and Professor Kim Peterson of Harvard University’s School of Public Health. In their findings infants who received primary care from caregivers other than their parents had a higher weigh gain; indicating potential risk of overfeeding.

2. The CDC reports in a study by (Kramer MS) that breastfed infants were associated with a reduced risk of pediatric overweight, therefore non-breastfed infants are at risk of becoming obese.

3. An article by Medindia.com Networking for Health states scientists who had observed mother interact with their infant children said that overweight mothers tend to over feed their children. And infants of obese mothers eat more as the weights of their mothers increased.

Healthy Eating and Exercising

Some of the things that prevent me from healthy eating are I start my day by picking up my grandbabies; taking the 7 year-old to school and the 2 & 3 year olds to child care. Then the commute to the valley to get to work for the past 7 to 10 years is slow & that seems to drain my energy, so I stop and get a cup of coffee. Once I get to work I consume myself with the daily duties. And for the past 2 years the current co-workers have been constantly interrupting me to help them with their work. The accountant was in the past week to perform the outside audit and saw first-hand the constant interrupts I get while trying to process my work. He made a comment about, how can I get my work done and that I need an assistant. I replied I’ve been saying that for a while, so don’t waste your time. What I need is to retire after 23 years, or at least from this job.

I’ve found that being constantly interrupted from my work and making decisions for other people’s work, I usually don’t take a break and end up going out to lunch from between 1:30pm to 2:00pm. And because my company is located in no man’s land I usually go to the nearest fast food place and I know that’s bad; especially since I’ve allowed myself to get a little angry about the interruptions from people who can’t perform their job duties. So I end up getting the wrong types of fast food for lunch. After the long drive home from work, I usually flop on the couch and watch my grandbabies at play. I usually have a nutritious meal for dinner, because I live next door to one of my sister’s [who’s a granny to my grandbabies, just as she is a mom to my daughters], who does most of the cooking for all of us. But, when I’m really upset about the things at work, I resort to eating fattening comfort foods, especially desserts.

Exercise for me is seldom. I make a schedule to exercise and always something comes along and I allow it to take president over my exercise schedule. The last schedule I started was in February, for 2 days out of a week. After a week I had a hard time walking, I had to wear braces on both knees, but I keep going until mid April. The instructor’s pace was not for seniors. That exercise program was far above my abilities. The reason I chose an exercise program is because when I have to report to someone, I seem to do a better job of exercising. But, I know that I should not stop exercising; and I have lousy excuses, since my sister has about four different pieces of exercise equipment that I can use. I always seem to be too tired to use them; I start on one piece for about 3 to 5 minutes and say that’s enough for me.

Daily Health Assessments

As the teacher of young children, I want them all to be in good health, especially while they are in my care. I have an obligation to check the health of each child, not only for the benefit of the child, but for the health and safety of all the children. A sick child may put the other children as well as me at risk of becoming ill. That’s one of the reasons children’s health checks should be one of the most important aspects in the daily schedule of activities. I feel that daily health assessments should occur to know the normal health of the children. If something is unusual about the appearance of a child, I will know it, because of taking daily health assessments. I will be able to take immediate action about the condition of the child by performing the health check when the child first arrives.

By checking the children daily and keeping records of the health assessments, I will be in a position to alert the parents, if there is a change in their children’s appearance that may need medical attention; for example if a child constantly rubs their eyes, it may indicate a vision problem. And by the child receiving early medical attention, it may avoid any negative learning abilities caused by vision impairment.

Daily health assessments should be as regular as all the other daily activities. When observing the children at their activities you know what is normal for them. As a teacher I am in close contact with the children on a daily basis. I want the children to be in good health to enable them to perform their activities and enjoy their day at school. When children become ill, it impairs them from doing their best in school. A sick child is not a happy child, and this saddens me to see little children sick. So, I would separate the child from the other children and care for him/her and comfort him/her as much as I can until the parent is able to come and take the child home.

Childhood Memory of Eating with Someone

My earliest childhood memory of eating with someone is “ancient history.” "SMILE"
I grow-up in the 50s and early 60s. My mom always ate dinner at the dining room table, after my dad and siblings finished eating, which was at the kitchen table. So, at the table it was mostly my dad and the younger siblings, six of us. While my dad was at the table, we children would eat our food in total silence. I always felt uneasy when my dad was at the table. But when he finished, which was always before us kids, we would make jokes and laugh through the rest of the meal.

I remember one incident at dinner, my mom cooked black-eyed peas, she said, “She cooked them plain because that’s the way my dad liked them.” [as a child, I 100% did not like BLACK-EYED PEAS, now as an adult, season them right and that’s some good eating]. While my dad was at the table I eat them at snail pace. But, when he finished eating and left the room, I thought, what can I put on these peas, so that my mom will not make me eat them. I looked in the frig. and took out the jar of jelly and pour it on top of the peas. When my mom came in the kitchen and looked at my plate, it must have really grossed her out, because she told me to put my plate on the sink and go watch TV. Surprise, surprise, surprise, I didn’t get in trouble.
